Scottish Tourist Board Gold for Green Tourism

Eco Tourism and Environment

Highland Holiday Cottages near Aviemore were the first in Strathspey and Badenoch for self catering accommodation to attain Gold Eco-rating in the Green Business Tourism Awards.

Eco-tourism is about connecting conservation, communities, and sustainable travel. Along with our continued upgrade of existing facilities, Highland Holiday Cottages agree that in today's current climate, "improved environmental performance" equates to "enhanced business development". Highland Holiday Cottages are therefore committed to the implementation of proactive measures to help protect and sustain the local environment. Highland Holiday Cottages aims to achieve the objective of improved environmental performance through pollution prevention, increased customer / supplier awareness and continuous improvement. Our overall company aim is:

"To be in the top quartile in the Cairngorms National Park with regard to environmental performance for self catering, without affecting Quality".

To do this Highland Holiday Cottages made an early decision to develop the following documents which provides us with an integrated approach to identifying, managing and improve environmental performance:

We also made a list of some Key GREEN Web sites

GREEN NEWS - All our cottages have eco-friendly cleaning products for guests to use, electric meters - where guests can monitor their consumption, composting caddys for compostable kitchen waste, energy saving light bulbs wherever practical, and seven out of eight cottages have eco wood-burning stoves. We offer 10% GREEN discount on all guests arriving by public transport. Don't forget to ask. For the 'How to get to the Cairngorms National Park' webpage, please click here . On this page you can access the Cairngorms Explorer Public Transport. Also, at high season, the 'Heather Hopper' Bus Service runs between Braemar, Glenshee and Blairgowrie via Cairnwell. It provides a much needed public transport link for residents and visitors between Blairgowrie in the south, and the Royal Deeside area of the Cairngorms National Park.
